Let's all help keep our community safe
Not your classic Nigerian Telegram scammer
We are all planning for our favourite convention months, sometims a year in advance. Most of us hop into unofficial Discord servers and Telegram groups looking for hotel roommates or a ride, especially after lotteries go out and we are left out to find alternate routes. Most of the time it works out great, but not always.
There are documented cases of scams in our community: people collecting money for hotel rooms that never materialise or individuals who use the chaos of hotel scarcity or FOMO to take advantage of others. Even though there aren't tons of cases, one is already too many, and can ruin their convention before it even start, leaving a bad taste associated to your convention.
Convention staff already have enough on their plate. They can't moderate every unofficial group chat. And attendees are largely left to fend for themselves, doing manual homework on strangers with no tools to help.
A needle in the haystack
A not dangerous issue but extremely annoying is visibility. You ask if anyone has a spot in their rooms, and soon enough your message is buried under hundreds of other chat messages, stickers, etc.
Consurf removes that frustration by having a visible home for con goers needs, either accomodation or travel companionship. It's even better when your convention points them here, they know at least they have visibility, and show you care (even more).
What Consurf brings to the table
We help vet people and aggregate interests.
Roommate & carpool listings, per convention iteration
Dedicated, organised ads for each event. No more digging through hundreds of messages in a group chat to find who still has a hotel spot.
Profile verification at glance
We allow users to connect their accounts to FurAffinity and Bluesky, show join dates, and surface account history, so people can do their homework before trusting a stranger with their hotel money.
Education as an extra defence
Let's be honest, it's not cheap to attend cons, adding payment protection or other insurance will only make it less accessible. We monitor our activity and can send warnings to users if something is suspicious, and give con goers access to material to spot red flags.
Zero cost
Consurf is free for attendees and free for conventions. The service is personally funded by its creators and supported by our wonderful Patreons. You can exist here without any expectation to spend money!
Active monitoring
Consurf watches for suspicious patterns, including fake accounts, repeat bad actors, and unusual lingo. Volunteers are always welcome, and appreciated!
We help people connect, not collect their money
Unlike other platforms, we do not intermediate payments or sell insurance. We educate attendees on safer practices and help them find the right match.
What a partnership actually looks like
A partnership with Consurf is mutual agreement to recognize each other. It's a relationship of trust. Here's how it works in practice:
Your convention brings:
- • A shout-out to Consurf on your website and social media
- • A link to your convention's page on Consurf
- • Your community's trust
Consurf brings:
- • Active post monitoring at key milestones (reg opens, hotel block drops, etc.)
- • Increased scrutiny to changes to the event data not made by your staff
- • A safer space that is monitored for bad actors
- • A dedicated, organised place for your attendees
Think of it this way: right now, your attendees are already organising rooms and rides, just in places you can't see or moderate. Consurf gives that activity a safe, visible home where you can feel good pointing people to.
We're already out there
Consurf is already building partnerships with some of the biggest conventions in the furry fandom. We're keeping the first few close to the chest for now, but announcements are coming soon and we couldn't be more excited!
Beyond the safety side, Consurf is also an organised open-data repository for furry conventions worldwide, tracking cons all the way back to 1989. Whether your con is celebrating its 20th anniversary or its first year, it has a home here.
